Job description

The Assistant Head of Inshore Boating is instrumental as part of a team working to support volunteers and colleagues across the UK, with a focus on our five activities of dinghy sailing, paddlesport, powerboating, rowing and windsurfing. The post will require experience of dealing with people of all ages/backgrounds, in the management of delivering activities, equipment/facilities and supporting the development of instructors.

We are looking for a passionate practitioner, with a background in delivering both on and off the water, and in-depth experience of operating procedures and governing documentation. Experience of working with young people is essential.

Job description

The primary purpose of the Marine Engineer is to deliver the maintenance and safe operation of all machinery on board the vessel. Responsibility spans the hull, structure, main and auxiliary machinery, electrical and electronic systems, fuel, water, LP air and hydraulics, and the planning and execution of off-season maintenance periods. A comprehensive level of advice and support to the onboard Engineer is provided by our two, office based, Engineering Technical staff.

Applicants should have the requisite experience and should ideally have completed an approved engine course. They should also either hold a current Seafarer Medical Certificate or be willing to obtain one.  The ability to work effectively with young people as well as the permanent and relief crew members is essential. Ship system familiarisation, child safeguarding and any necessary sea safety course refresher training will be given to the successful applicant.

Job description

The ideal applicant will have experience of square rig sailing, general seamanship and maintenance of sailing vessels.  The Bosun is primarily responsible for care and management of all upper deck equipment, spars, sails, yards, berthing wires, ropes, fenders, awnings, flags, fittings on deck and aloft.  Mainly employed on the foredeck, the Bosun must have the ability to lead and manage a team and to work effectively with young people. 

The successful applicant will be required to become a uniformed member of the Sea Cadet Corps and to undertake an enhanced Criminal Records Bureau check.  The post holder will be responsible to the Commanding Officer TS Royalist, through the Sailing Master.

Job description

The primary purpose of the 1st Lieutenant on board the Marine Society’s Power Vessels is to act as the Second in Command of the TS Jack Petchey. You will be supporting the Commanding Officer to deliver high quality sail training experiences to cadets aged between 12-18.

The vessels travel throughout the UK and near continent between March and November each year. You will be responsible for ensuring the safety, discipline, morale, welfare and day-to-day employment of permanent crewmembers, embarked personnel and cadets is appropriately managed. You will also act as the vessel’s Training Officer and Safety Officer.

Although we currently only have a small team of 2 paid staff, we also have a team of 60 volunteers to help deliver our programmes.
